One of the most common things we get asked is: ‘can I use a Menstrual Cup if I have an IUD or copper coil’? The answer is yes, absolutely!
It’s always a good idea to have a chat with your doctor first to tell them you plan to use a menstrual cup with your IUD / coil. We recommend asking them to trim the strings of your IUD to remove any risk of them getting caught up in your cup.
We also recommend that you wait three cycles after you’ve had your IUD fitted before you start using your Hello Cup to ensure its settled into its new home comfortably. It’s important to note that IUDs are most commonly dislodged during the first three months after they have been inserted. One in 20 will be naturally expelled (regardless of cup use) and the most common time for them to be expelled is during your period. It’s important to note that research has shown there is no increased risk of explosion due to cup (or tampon) use.
When it comes to removing your menstrual cup – remember slow and steady wins the race. Make sure you have broken the seal properly and slowly pull down your cup.
