One question we get asked all the time is: ‘can teenagers use menstrual cups?’ Yes, absolutely they can! As one of the first menstrual cup companies to develop a cup specifically with teens in mind (our XS Hello Cup), we already have heaps of fannytastic teen users.
Developing a small cup that suited young users was always the top of the list when we started The Hello Cup.
School is hard enough but having to cope with periods at school can be stressful. The benefits of menstrual cups can make dealing with periods at school easier because you can leave them in for longer (up to 12 hours), you don’t need to change them each time you do a wee (no string absorbing the wee) and best of all – you can swim and play sport while wearing your cup. They can’t do your homework for you, but apart from that, they’re pretty amazing.
We’re not going to say mastering a menstrual cup is easy, but neither is using tampons for the first time. While some can get the hang of cup life straight away, for others it can take practice.
We’re read myths that virgins can’t wear menstrual cups. That’s pure rubbish. It is, however, a good idea to know you body, especially your downstairs. Pelvic Health Physio Leanne Waite recommends whipping out a mirror and having a good look at your vagina so you can visualise where the cup is going and also how to relax your pelvic floor muscles to make insertion easier. Have a read of her tips here.
Did you know if you start using a Hello Cup when you are a teen, you will only need a maximum of 8 over your period lifetime. Compare that to 11,000 – 15,000 single use tampons and pads. Aside from saving yourself thousands of $$$$, you are giving a pretty massive helping hand to Mother Nature too as single use items can take up to 500 years to breakdown – which means every non-organic tampon ever used is still somewhere on our planet. Yuck.
